Moira Donohoe

Lives and works in the Sierra Nevada foothills

“I want to locate my life in this vast and sometimes terrifying planet. I want to mark a place to a degree that I am able, that’s marked me for a very long time. And I want to understand why I am here, in this particular place, in this particular time.”

Moira Donohoe grew up in Yosemite Valley, and draws much of the inspiration for her work from the difference facets of the area, of which she has intimate knowledge. In her work, she reflects on the timescales and geological processes, such as the movement of ice, water, and plate tectonics, that have shaped the landscape. On view here are works in pastel, oil paint, and watercolor. They include striking vistas of the landscape, often painted at dusk or dawn, and imbued with magical qualities of light and atmosphere, rendered in luminous colors.

Donohoe says about her newest works (two of which are featured here): "Ravens at Dewey Point Yosemite and Cathedral Range from the Trail are efforts to describe the connection that place has to spirit…There are many aspects of Yosemite that can be borrowed to describe expressions of spirit.” Donohoe sees “storms, mountains, ravens, seasons, people, flora and fauna” as expressing essential elements of the powerful spirit of place in Yosemite Valley.
